export first, if you want a copy
Deletion is permanent, so if there's anything in your history you might want later, pull it out before you delete.
Settings → Privacy → Export my data. You'll get a file containing your transcripts and rewrites, your custom modes, your pinned items, and your account details — in a machine-readable format you can open elsewhere. It's prepared within N minutes and the download link expires after N days.
Voice recordings aren't in the export, because we've already deleted them.
delete one transcript
In your stream, swipe the card and choose delete. It disappears from your device immediately and is removed from our servers within N hours. Anything you already pasted into another app stays there — we have no way to reach into your messages.
delete all transcripts, keep the account
Settings → Privacy → Delete all transcripts. This clears your entire history, on the device and on our servers, and keeps your account, your custom modes and your settings. Useful if you want a clean slate without starting over.
You'll be asked to confirm, because there's no undo.
delete your account
Settings → Account → Delete account.
This is inside the app, takes three taps, and doesn't require you to email anyone or explain yourself. Apple's Guideline 5.1.1(v) requires apps that support account creation to offer account deletion in the app — but a deletion flow that's harder than the signup flow is a dark pattern regardless of what's required, so we've kept it symmetrical.
We'll ask you to confirm, and we'll offer the export one more time. After you confirm:
- You're signed out on every device immediately.
- Your account and content are queued for deletion and become inaccessible right away.
- Deletion from our live systems completes within N days.
- Encrypted backups age out on a rolling N-day cycle, after which nothing remains.
There's no grace period and no reactivation. If you sign up again later it's a genuinely new account with nothing carried over.
what actually gets deleted
| Data | Outcome | When |
|---|---|---|
| Voice recordings | Already deleted after transcription | Within N hours of recording |
| Transcripts & rewrites | Deleted | Within N days |
| Custom modes, pins, dictionary | Deleted | Within N days |
| Account & sign-in link | Deleted | Within N days |
| Push notification token | Deleted | Immediately |
| Crash & diagnostic logs | De-identified, then aged out | Within N days |
| Aggregate usage counts | Retained with no link to you | — |
| Support emails | Retained then deleted | N months after the thread closes |
Our processors are instructed to delete on the same schedule. The providers involved are named in the privacy policy.
what we have to keep, and why
We'd rather tell you this than let you find out later.
- Records we're legally required to hold — tax, accounting or statutory records where a law sets a minimum retention period. These are kept for that period and nothing longer.
- Abuse and security records — if an account was banned for harassment or fraud, we keep the minimum needed to stop the same person coming straight back. Not your transcripts; a record that the ban happened.
- De-identified counts — aggregate numbers like "how many rewrites happened in July" survive deletion because there's nothing in them that points to you, and we don't attempt to re-identify them.
Nothing on this list is used for marketing, profiling or model training.
if you've already deleted the app
You don't need to reinstall. Email privacy@yap.app from the address on your yap account with the subject Delete my account.
Include the email address you signed in with and whether you used Apple or Google. We may need to verify that the request is really from you — we'll only ever do that using information we already hold, and we'll never ask you for a password.
We acknowledge within N working days and complete deletion within 30 days, then confirm in writing.
If yap ships on Android: Google Play requires a publicly reachable URL that lets users request account and data deletion without installing the app. This page and this section are that URL — link it in the Play Console Data safety form.
withdrawing consent without deleting anything
You can switch off individual permissions and keep your account and history intact.
| To stop | Go to | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| New recordings | iOS Settings → yap → Microphone | Existing history stays searchable and pasteable. |
| Keyboard network access | iOS Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → yap → Allow Full Access | Keyboard still types and pastes; can't rewrite. |
| Notifications | iOS Settings → yap → Notifications | No effect on anything else. |
| Contributing to accuracy improvements | yap → Settings → Privacy | Off by default. Turning it off stops future sharing. |
| Product emails | Unsubscribe link in any email | You'll still get service and security notices. |
Withdrawing consent stops processing from that point on. It doesn't reverse processing already carried out lawfully — for that, delete the content.
other requests
Access, correction, portability, restriction, objection, or a complaint — email privacy@yap.app, or read your rights in the privacy policy for what applies where you live.
Under India's DPDP Act you also have the right to nominate someone to exercise these rights on your behalf if you're unable to, and to escalate an unresolved grievance to the Data Protection Board of India after raising it with our Grievance Officer: name, designation, email.
Two things have to be true before this page is honest. First, every retention window marked N needs a real number that matches what the backend actually does — a published policy your systems don't follow is worse than no policy. Second, the in-app paths named here (Settings → Account → Delete account and the rest) have to exist in the build a reviewer downloads, or this page becomes a Guideline 5.1.1(v) rejection with your own documentation as the evidence.
