Fastest way to get a useful answer: from inside yap, go to Settings → Help → Contact support. It attaches your app version, device model and iOS version automatically, so we don't have to ask. It never attaches your transcripts.
keyboard problems
The yap keyboard isn't showing up
Add it once in iOS Settings: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → yap.
Then, in any text field, hold the globe key (🌐) and pick yap from the list.
What is "Allow Full Access" and do I have to turn it on?
No. The yap keyboard works as a normal keyboard without it — you can type, switch keyboards, and paste from transcripts already saved on your device.
Full Access gives the keyboard network permission, which is what lets it send a recording off to be transcribed and bring the rewrite back. Without it, the rewrite button can't do anything.
We never read what you type, with or without Full Access. The privacy policy explains exactly what the permission is used for.
How do I turn Full Access off again?
Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → yap → Allow Full Access, off. The keyboard keeps typing.
The keyboard is slow to appear, or blank the first time
iOS loads keyboard extensions on demand and gives them very little memory. Force-quitting yap, or a low-memory situation, can make the first load slow. Switch away and back with the globe key. If it's blank every time, tell us your device and iOS version.
Can the keyboard open the yap app for me?
No, and it won't. Apple's Guideline 4.4.1 forbids keyboard extensions from launching any app other than Settings, so everything the keyboard offers has to happen inside the keyboard itself.
microphone problems
yap says it can't hear me
Check Settings → yap → Microphone is on. Then check nothing else is holding the mic — end any call or voice note first. If you're on AirPods, try switching to the phone's own mic.
Nothing recorded / "too short"
Hold the button for the whole time you're speaking and release when you're done. A tap won't record — that's deliberate, so you never record by accident.
Does yap listen when I'm not holding the button?
No. There's no wake word and no background listening. Recording happens only while the button is held, and yap shows an indicator the whole time — as does iOS itself, in the status bar.
bad rewrites
Speech recognition and AI rewriting both make mistakes, and yours are the most useful data we have for fixing them.
It got my words wrong
Tap the transcript and edit it, then re-run the rewrite. If a particular word is wrong every time — a name, a place, a bit of slang — add it in Settings → Dictionary.
Accuracy drops in noisy places, on speakerphone, and when you speak very fast. It also drops on heavy code-switching, which we're actively working on.
The tone came out wrong
Switch mode and re-run — same recording, no need to say it again. If a built-in mode consistently misses, write your own in Settings → Modes → New mode and describe the tone in a sentence.
My Hindi came back in the wrong script
Hindi mode outputs Devanagari; casual mode keeps Hinglish in Roman script. Pick whichever the person you're messaging actually reads. If it picked the wrong one within a single mode, please report it — that's a bug, not a preference.
Reporting a bad rewrite
Long-press any rewrite and choose Report this rewrite. It sends that one transcript and rewrite to us so we can look at it. Nothing else goes with it, and you can review what's being sent before it goes.
account & data
Delete one transcript, or all of them
Swipe a transcript in your history to delete it. To clear everything: Settings → Privacy → Delete all transcripts.
Delete my account
Settings → Account → Delete account, inside the app. It's permanent and you don't need to email us for it. Full detail on the data and deletion page.
Get a copy of my data
Settings → Privacy → Export my data. You'll get a machine-readable file of your transcripts, custom modes and account details.
I deleted the app — is my account gone?
No. Deleting the app removes it from your device but leaves your account and synced transcripts on our servers. Delete the account first, or use the web deletion request if the app is already gone.
Switching phones
Sign in with the same Apple or Google account and your history syncs down. You'll need to add the keyboard again on the new device — iOS treats that as a fresh install.
report a bug
Send it to support@yap.app with as much of this as you can manage:
- What you did, what you expected, what happened instead.
- Device and iOS version, and whether it was in the app or the keyboard.
- A screen recording if it's something we'd struggle to reproduce.
Please don't include anything private in the example — a rewrite you didn't mind sending us is more useful than one you'll regret.
legal & privacy
- Privacy policy — what we collect, who processes it, how long we keep it.
- Terms of use — the agreement between you and us.
- Data and deletion — every way to get your data out or gone.
